It is situated on an isthmus between the Ocean and Ohiwa harbour which offers a safe mooring for many of the boats operating in the area. Surfing and fishing are popular activities in the area. A local delicacy is locally harvested oysters (in season). White Island, an active volcanic island, is a short boat ride away. Although feeling like a small village Ohope is only 5 kilometers from Whakatane, the local service centre which offers a large range of retailers and service businesses. It is also ideally placed to access the tourist areas of Rotorua and Taupo in the central North Island and the East Cape area. Ohope has a small airport with 5 direct flights a day to Auckland, a 45 minute flight away.
